I need some help. I have been a trout fisherman only when the season opens and have not taken advantage of the Spec. Reg. areas. I would like to do that a little more and get out fishing perhaps at the end of this week and next. Maybe with some luck there I will be motivated to go be out in the cold a little more. Since there aren't going to be many top water flies right now, what do you suggest I use?
A blackflash wooly comes to mind, but once I get past the buggers, I am not sure.
Thanks for any help you can give a guy.

Nick,

Early black stoneflies #16 black body, down wing (poly) and a black or grizzley hackle. on top. Maybe some small bwo's. If the water is running below normal and clear and you see rises.

But for themost part, if you are fishing this time of year, especially to fresh stocked trout in the special reg areas, Streamers are a good bet. And of coursed your standard nymphs fished slow through likely holding areas.

Like Maurice said, I would stick to a lot of generic nymphs and midges. Hares Ears, Princes, zug bug, san juan, glo bugs, sucker spawns, zebra midges, muskrat nymphs and have bunch in smaller sizes too. Carry some 16-20.

If the water is really cold your gonna have to be patient. A lot of times trout won't leave their feeding lane to chase down food. Your gonna have to fish slowly and methodically covering every inch of water, feeding the fly right to them is a lot of times the ticket in colder weather.

Good Luck! :-D

Thanks, I have an uncle that swears by sucker spawn for early season. I let that slip my mind. It is nice if nothing else, to get those kind of reminders.

Maurice,
I checked for some recipes online for the early black stonefly. Seems like a decently easy tie. Might look ugly at first, but I think I can handle it.
Thanks.
