My wife and I always go on a week vacation each year. Usually we go the week after Laborday. After 35 years of married life we seemed to have exhausted destinations. I fish she does her thing in the morning then we enjoy each other doing things together. The beach seems to be our old stand by. Where do you go? I am not rich so we like to drive one day and enjoy the rest of the week. Perhaps this will help others like myself. Thanks TD

Hey Tony Check out Harmans on the sidebar... Couples and families rave about it. But if doing her thing means "shopping" it may be a little remote.

But I've never stayed there.

Take a road trip that has good fishing along the way or at the destination itself and take your time getting there. Lots of history to explore here in the Mid-A with good fishin' nearby if that's your thing...drive the Skyline Drive, explore the mtns of WV, head north to the Catskills or tick a National Park off the list; Shenandoah, Smokies, Acadia... I guess the variable is what activities ya'll like to do together in the afternoon?

The Wife and I love Harman's. If you're looking for something closer to home there's a great B&B in the Poconos that we have been to several times...

It looks stuffy but it is not. Billie, the owner is very nice. Lots of activities in the area including some great fishing.

Adirondack Mountains in NY. We've been vacationing there for 15 years. There are well known areas, such as Lake Placid/Ausable River but many other areas have great fishing and are less expensive & crowded. PM me if you want more info.

Great destinations for anglers & non-anglers within a day's drive that I'd recommend are: The Smokies in NC/TN, the Adirondacks in the Wilmington area, the Catskills or perhaps my favorite the Upper Connecticut River in New Hampshire. PM me for specifics.

I'm knocking off 2 great parks this year.Going to Acadia NP in 2 weeks and then off to Glacier NP in mid July. Fly rod is coming with me.

Thanks, we have been to many that you guys have suggested. Keep them coming I am sure there are others that have the same problem. I am going to look into 2 or 3 suggestions. I am always looking for something different. Warm or salt water. as a trout guide living in Boiling springs I put alot of time on Trout water. Last year we went to Michigan. Toured the Ford truck factory and a restored area near the factory. We went north and I fished 3 or 4 streams then I fished a trib to the St. Joe and caught 2 Skamania Steelhead. This was a little more traveling but well worth the seat time.

Another suggestion would be to head up to the finger lakes region and fish the lakes for lake trout and smallies. If you have a kayak great otherwise you can rent one up there and fish. I would recommend Keuka Lake it is just polluted with Lakers. Depending on when you go you could jig lakers in 100ft of water and fish topwater flies in the evening for smallies. It is a great time and the Mrs would have all the wine country up there.

I go to the Upper Connecticut in NH ever September for a week. It is a long ride but doable in one day. Last year I did it in one day on a Harley Road King (that was pushing it a bit!). There is plenty of lodging, good streams and ponds, and restaurants and plenty of fishing. I stay at the Lake Francis campground, which is one of the best. Is the fishing any better than PA or others mentioned? No. Truth is I like Penns Creek better for pure fishing experience. But there are moose, loons, and big brook trout - which make it a little different. I think it is just fun to mix it up.

Tony, one of the best weeklong trips my wife and I ever took was a driving trip right after Labor Day up the coast of Maine with stops at Portland, kennebunkport(sp), Camden and finally Acadia. Great food, drink and sights. I am sure you could work in some fishing.

have you thought about Canada ? - you can get some great cheap flights from Newark NY with Porter Airways.

Cape Breton is supposed to be wonderful. or Quebec city ?

for something outside the box - Rejkavik in Iceland is 3 hours from Boston - fjords, mountain scenery, shopping, thermal spas and world class Atlantic Salmon & sea run browns Fishing

Been there twice and can't wait to go back.. The Davidson in NC at the Pisgah National Forest is one helluva trout haven and there are an incredible number of tribs that are perfect for native Browns..

As well, Harman's in WV is spectacular...

Best wishes

I'm a big Finger Lakes fan. Hiking in the gorges, visiting small college towns, antiquing, going to the wineries, and of course fishing. The Finger Lakes State parks are nice and you can get a cabin in some.

The big thing in the Fingers is lake trout and jigging them up with bass tackle is a blast. Not much stream trout action in the summer, but there is some - pm me if you are interested. Some cool gorges to fish. The coldwater fish and pike fly fishing is best from Nov through May when the water is below 50F. One oddball target in the summer is longnose gar. Gar on a fly is certainly different.

Tony, I know I'm late to the party here but, I would consider stripers in the Newport Rhode Island area. Beautiful area and Saltwaters Edge Fly shop is a great contact for the area. Matununk oyster bar is worth the trip alone.

Hi Jeff, I know your post is from a long time ago but I will ask anyway in the hopes you are still active or someone else could help me. I am heading up to the Finger Lakes in mid-August (Cayuga Lake) and wanted to know if you could share any advice on jigging for lake trout? What type of jigs, what areas of the lake to target, etc.

Dear GlenmooreJohn,

Way to resurrect a 10-year-old thread!

That said, head up to Union Springs on the north end of Cayuga Lake and fish for largemouth, pike, and panfish. Trout are caught all year long on Cayuga, but it is predominately a job best suited for a boat with good sonar and downriggers, especially in the Summer.

The NY State Record largemouth, was caught in June up there near Union Springs. It was over 12 pounds but is still awaiting certification.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

There are more than a few tackle shops around Cayuga you can call for advice including a ****'s Sporting Goods & Bass Pro Shops in Auburn.

Good luck!!

Skyline Drive is very nice. If the fishing is still shut down in the park (as it was a couple weeks ago) you can walk through the caverns and listen to the carillon (at sunset) in Luray.
