Nice article. Brings me back. In 60's and 70's caenis were "the curse" for me because in my world didn't have good small hooks, good light tippets and good floatants, or good skills - so tried throw an ant or grasshopper and hope. Also, brings back memories since I have fished tricos in Michigan and on the East Branch (towards Labor Day the spinner fall is in civilized late morning).
This year I have had trouble. Spinners out for a couple of weeks but haven't seen much surface action. Fortunately, fish feeding heavy on midges underwater so fishing is good, but do like like try the spinner feeders.
