Drifting the Hollows

Six days in June. North-Central Pennsylvania.

Fifty miles on foot. Hundreds in the truck.

Dust on the bumper.

Mayflies. And Caddis. And a leopard moth the size of my hand.

Set up the tent. Kettle, Hyner, Little Pine.

Drifted into the hollows. Some had water. Some you could see their bones.

Their traces stitch the mountains together.
Their names drag their history with them.

Hammersley. Young Woman’s. Pine.

Those speckled trout we searched for and found. The brown ones came along for the ride.

Nice biographical photo shoot. Keep these places secret.

Awesome pics. Pretty good results it seems for the fairly low water conditions.

Great images. Really like #38, forest area. I have hollows with brookies on my mind, want to learn new ones, and just realized that using a computer, not phone, you can find and tweak a usda-created data set of individual tree species density for smallish land areas... try putting "arcgis individual tree species parameters" or somesuch in google... zoom in to an interesting pa mtn area, set for hemlocks, moderate transparency...

Get very detailed projection of hemlock density... hemlocks are sometimes in swamps, I looked for hemlocks in ravines that could have trout.. tried to filter out areas I know are rhodo hell, some of which showed up as high hemlock areas.. sought northern areas of the state, where I think I read there is less hemlock damage from invasive insect...

Tried this yesterday to seek NEPA high-shade ravines, so low water temps for later this summer.. first time out, found stunning forest I hadn't seen... tremendous shade... complete with large bear running into the cool landscape...

Love it!

Sometimes fishing with you guys vicariously is really fun. :)

Yo kling - most bodacious! This pic set is one I'll come back to many times. Thanks for them.

As an arborist I should have thought of this as well. Brilliant.

Nice slide show

Looks like you had a fantastic week! Hoping for rain so good fishing throughout the NCPA region is possible on the small streams in the coming weeks.

Beautiful! Glad the weather gods looked favorably upon you! You will not forget your 2020 trip.

Absolutely wonderful photos. In your travels, I think you're lucky you didn't have to take a pic of a rattler. Looks like you had a great trip.

Stunning pics, some of those brookies look pretty good sized as well. I've done the Hammersley adventure once and recognize some of the pics...the sense of remoteness up there is a strange feeling. Thanks for sharing this!

Love it, thanks for taking the time to share.

Nice words and photos.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice! Thanks for sharing those beautiful pics!
