On singlebarbed.com fossil records show its not an ivasive species its been here for thousands of years. Its too long and detailed to repeat here, great site by the way.
 
Oh no! It can't be true. Not so long ago, the earth is abnormally cooling ....only to be followed by "the ice caps are melting". Hype / panic / knee jerk reaction is a wonderful thing. I've seen blooms in the Delaware for years. It shows in one section but is virtually non existent a hundred yards away. Something in the make up of the water, temps or currents in some places may cause infrequent blooms. I'd bet that extensive tests would turn it up in thousands of streams around our region. I have no problem believing it was here long before we showed up with felt soles boots.
 
Feeds on Phosphates or something else similar and likes cold water habitat.
