Here's my newest YouTube tutorial, one that many of us PA fly fisherman should know well: The deer hair ant that is featured in George Harvey's book. This is a simple pattern to tie and really effective; enjoy!

Nice pattern. I'm not sure you need to stack the butts. They should be relatively even when cut from the hide, and a bit of trimming should be all you need. A tip you might want to consider is loosely spiraling the thread back to the bend after the initial tie in. This maintains the air pockets in the hair and adds a bit of buoyancy. I also use this method on deer hair beetles and stimulators.

Thanks, Mike; I appreciate the comments. The only piece I forgot to mention is that you can add more or less deer hair based on how wide you would like the abdomen to be.

The spiraling you spoke about is exactly how George Harvey recommends it; good catch!
