Yeah - they work and easy to tie with craft store materials.

I would imagine they would work just fine. They are essentially the same fly as the Murray Marauder, with the only difference being the bead chain eyes (the Murray Marauder calls for lead dumb bell eyes)

IMO, the Maurader is the best (usually) actively retrieved subsurface fly originally designed for warmwater/coolwater fish.
 
I try for neutral buoyancy and let them fall slowly (I put a little weight in the back to counterbalance the bead eyes). Makes for a horizontal fall instead of the head first dive which dying minnows don't do.
