Hello, has anyone found a good source for Comparadun Deer Hair, typically used for the wings?

Thank you.

Can't recall using any deer hair made specifically for comparaduns.

I use what's called coastal deer hair just about all my fly wings.
It's shorter and finer, and just looks a bit nicer on everything IMO

Comparadun Hair

Of course there is always natural variation, but this is where I've gotten my most recent supply of comparadun hair and have been satisfied.

Thank you, yes that's what I'm looking for a good source for 'coastal deer hair `.

I would check Feather-Craft, or a shop that carries Nature's Spirit or Veniard products.

IIRC, When Swisher & Richards introduced/popularized? the Comparadun in 71 they suggested using the hair from a deer’s mask because of its thinness and therefore was less likely to flare out when tied upright.
Less to waste if you’re a successful deer hunter.

(The IIRC is my disclaimer). Good Luck!

Blue Ribbon Flies has a great selection of comparadun hair. If you call them and explain what you want, they typically do a good job of picking out the right patch.

Also, Nature's Spirit is usually a solid choice.

Flyfishers Paradise is a good source for comparadun hair.

They tie their own flies for the shop, including really nice comparaduns, so they know the materials.

+1 on Blue Ribbon Flies- excellent deer hair!

Another vote for Blue Ribbon Flies for deer hair

I go to a fly shop and hand-select different type hair for tying all types of flies.

You can waste a lot of money and never be satisfied with your flies if you buy many materials like hair or hackle feathers sight unseen.

Check out each piece in the shop and select the pieces best suitable for your tying.

This can only be done in person.

I write on the back of the hide the type of hair and/or what it should be used for such as "spinning", "comparadun", etc.

Here is a really good tutorials on selecting comparadun hair >

Good luck.

Most likely the best hair comes from a deer mask. !Ask a hunter for the head and skin it out! Best of the best!
