When tying traditional catskill drys, how important are the wings. I ask because I don't enjoy tying the wings and if they aren't necessary, I'd preffer to omit them from my flys. I've tied them without wings before and had success but I mainly fish small freestones for streambread fish whom aren't too picky. Curious to hear your opinions.

I tie them on anything bigger than a size 16, because I think the silhouette could be a factor.

On smaller flies, I either omit them, or tie them in some high vis material.

I think that wings are important, and wouldn't tie a mayfly without them - especially on large flies like march browns and green drakes.
I also fish mainly for wild trout, which are usually quite picky.
But you could probably get away with no wings on easier stocked fish
But I'd recommend tying all flies with wings - it's really not hard once you get the hang of it. Just keep at it until you get it right
