if i tie a hair wing fly and the wing is too long should i trim it or is it detrimental to the fly its self....or is i t just personal preferance

personal preference...for me anyway.

I agree with Brad 100%. I think properly sizing a wing has more to do with the action of the fly. Aesthetics are important to me though so i dont trim. as far as the fish are concerned i dont think trimming matters. Depends what you want your fly to look like.

Trim or not trimmed? Where have I heard this before?

I tie lots of baitfish streamer patterns. I usually leave about 1 hook shank length past the back of the shank. I don't like to trim them as it is hard to keep the basic teardrop shape I like.

with out reading this thread ill have you know that i only trimmed one fly and i started doing it the right way i dont like the way it looks trimmed thanks for your replies
