Avatar envy

I see many nice avatars on this site, but I am unable to create one of my own. I also see that a guy with a huge German brown asked in an earlier post how to make an avatar and, although his problem was solved, he was not given an answer helpful to neophytes like me. Perhaps the secret is too valuable to reveal. If not, can someone enlighten me? How does one downsize his pic to achieve the 150 x 150 pixel size demanded by the site? Thanks.

If you have even a basic photo editor, it should allow you to resize and crop photos. If not, see if this utility helps:
