You are correct this fly really does work exceptionally well not just on Freestoners but also on Limestoners where fish have seen everything. I tie mine a whisker different. But the Bomber pattern works great.

Nearly identical to the Griffith's gnat, except for the different body, hackle, hook size, and the addition of a tail and wing

That's one of my favorites. Great indicator fly as well.
