Has anyone tried an activity tracking device like Fitbit or Jawbone....?
When I fish, I am pretty sure I walk a long way and sometimes against the current so there is a workout. I am curious as to how the casting motion affects the measurement and how small wading steps are tracked. Any insights would be appreciated.

I use a couple of apps on my phone - Oruxmaps for staying found and for tracking distance, altitude and speed, and RunKeeper, which is more of a fitness than a mapping app. I'm not familiar with either of the products you mentioned, and a lot boils down to the kind and amount of data you want to track and collect.

I have a Fitbit and love it. I wear it all the time. Not only does it track your steps but it will monitor your sleep and vibrate to wake you up. It is amazing. I charge it about once a week when it sends me an email that the battery is getting low. I will say this about fishing with the Fitbit. I doesn't seem to track my steps as well. There are times when I know I have walked 3-4 miles upstream and when I check it (you tap in twice and lights will blink to let you know roughly how many steps you have taken) it will be way off. I am guessing that I carry the rod with my hand that the Fitbit is on and not swaying my arm while I walk. But besides that this thing is awesome.

I checked out Oruxmaps on my Android. That's one nice little app. How does one "discover" apps like that?

I use map my hike, you can switch it for bike, hike, run, etc.

I think I found that one out of necessity. I had been using Google's My Tracks for logging hikes and fishing and Google broke that app with one of their updates. While researching a potential fix, I came across a post where someone recommended some alternatives. Since Orux it also supported offline maps, I took a look. I find apps I like through word of mouth (forums or people I know) and every now and then, I'll follow the other related apps link in Google Play and sometimes they land me on a winner.

How accurate would you say the app/phone is? If I walk down a trail a mile or so then wade in and out of the water and work my way back up stream, in your experience, has it pretty accurately reflected total ground covered?

Jakesleakywaders had one on his ankle a while back but I don't think he was allowed to fish with it on. Something about getting it wet...or leaving the house or something. Anyway, he is much happier now that he doesn't use it anymore. So there is that angle.

I still use my lowrance gps hand held for tracks.

whats a app, cell phone ? lol

Just want we all want-- someone tracking our physical movement.

I let the NSA take care of tracking for me...

A hand held GPSwill track how far you've gone. You can probably find an application that will convert distance and the casting motion into calories burned. I know there are some apps for calories burned walking, it's not hard to calculate.

I was concerned that the tracking device would mistake the false casting motion and think it was walking motion. That must be an ill found concern?

Bump.

I've had my tracking anklet on Big Spring, Muddy Creek, Codorus, Conewago, Susquehanna, Pinchot and others.

Just had to wear hip boots to keep it dry. Realized I like hippers better anyway for their lightweight packability and convenience.

On another note I had a Garman gecko about ten years ago. Pretty basic. Had a breadcrumb trail and all sorts of trip data.
