I bought myself one of these for solo fishing with tough climbs in isolated areas. You have to register in with NOAA, and I sure hope I never need to use it. For absolutely dire situations only. But I have taken spills in mountains with no one around or likey to show up, a tough hike back, and no cell service. It's expensive (about $400-500), but not too big and not too heavy. Kinda like buying side air bags in cars when they were an extra cost option.
