a success story - Salmon return to the Elwha

I suppose this makes me a grump, but so be it...

I can't for the life of me see what is so good about basically destroying the only high quality wild resident RT fishery on the Olympic Peninsula so that the Elwha can become like every other river on the peninsula, loaded with predominantly hatchery-reared salmon and steelhead.

I don't always agree that indigenous species are inherently or intrinsically superior. Sometimes, it is for the best. Sometimes not. This situation, IMO belongs in the latter category.

My understanding is they weren't going to stock the salmon in the river.Am I wrong?

I think it will be a very good thing. With the dam removed the salmon and steelhead have a chance of recovering. As long as the dam was there, that chance did not exist.

If they are still Hooked-On-Hatcheries, that's a different issue. And that can change, and probably will.

BTW, the latest edition of Trout magazine has a good article on the Elwha.

Trout Magazine has an article about the Elwah R. in the winter issue. It's good stuff.
