tied a few size 10 and 13 short shank PT's. The 13 is a gold hook. The white tail one is a favorite with some on the San juan river and works here too.
Is the white tail some kind of sparkle yarn and is it there to represent an emerger? Other then the bead do you add lead wraps for weight? Hope these aren't silly questions but being new I'm planning on leaning heavy on the pt nymph this year
That's a very efficient way to tie pheasant tails and no less effective, I'd guess than something more intricate. I do this but I put some peacock or copper ice dub behind the bead and frizz it for a little more movement and color.
Pheasant tail fibers are weak. Those tails will break off easily. I use wood duck out the back. its more what the actual bugs' tails look like and it holds up much better. It takes more time, but that's what I do. Some great tiers that I had the good fortune to learn from do the same thing.

Yea those are really simple PT's. I bet you can crank a bunch of those out in no time. I usually spend time building a peacock or dubbed thorax, wing case, etc. I bet it hardly makes a difference, if any. I was also talking to a guy recently who ties a peacock herl nymph - just peacock herl and a bead - and says it catches a lot of fish for him. Similar idea, I think.
white tail is sparkle yarn. I do other styles also, will post more later today when I am done. no lead and beads are plastic. henry look closer with glasses.
peacock and bead is a good pattern.
