hi just wondering if any of u guys know if i can get sz.22 2x long nymph hooks. been trying but the smallest i see is size 18. or can someone suggest an alternative im looking to get started on the fall baetis seaon. thanks

Hi buzz - the 2XL designation refers to the shank length. The 2XL hook in a size 22 has a hook gap of a size 22 hook, with the shank length of a size 18 hook. In other words, just use a size 18 standard length nymph hook - it'll have a bigger hook gap (an advantage).

Using Tiemco as an example, you could use the following hooks:

3769 sz18 - a standard length nymph hook
3761 sz20 - a 1XL length hook

Don't get too caught up in nymph sizes, as they do vary, and the nymph of a particular size mayfly is often a size bigger than the dun or spinner of the same bug.

I like size 18 for my baetis, but I do use dai riki natural nymph bend 3x long size 20 for some.
Like H-A said, the decrease in hook gap has lost its fair share of fish.

although you ask about a 2x,my girl likes the 3x dai-riki #270 in size 24.
it is very similar to a tiemco 200r.a very nice hook.i generally don't tye that small, but she does ,and the flies look nice in that size, especially PT's

she gets them from: http://feather-craft.com/

i believe dan bailey markets them and also has them.
