It's often a good idea to put your newly tied flies into water to see how they float or swim when retrieved. Often, flies that look fantastic when finished in the vise, don't perform so well in water.
For emergers, I like mine to hang just below the surface and dropping them in a clear bowl of water and then looking at them against the sky is a good way to confirm that they float like you want 'em to, and have the slender, buggy profile that I seek in my flies.
