I can truthfully say I have only lost 2 fish. As a young boy I made the mistake of putting fish on a stringer and playing with them in the water. Lost grip of the free end and down stream they went.
In all other cases, they spit the hook; or i pull the hook from their mouth; or the line, tippet, or hook breaks ; or they get wrapped around a log or rock; or in the case of salmon/steelhead i cannot keep up with their initial run.
In all cases, they are not lost. I know exactly where they are. In the water.
AND ..... In all cases, at no point were they ever mine.
