Little J Questions

Huh? I thought we could fish pretty much anywhere that is not between upper and lower limits of sections designated Stocked Trout Water. Maybe I'm wrong..
Yeah, I didn't quite word that right. OP is obviously looking for trout and I was just trying to say make sure you are fishing where you can.

I personally wouldn't take my chances fishing anywhere near stocked water even if I was outside the stocked limits, but to each their own.

I’m very familiar with the regulations, I’ve been fishing all winter lol. But I’ll make sure none of the streams I might fish are closed since I don’t know the area at all. Hopefully I don’t have to go elsewhere but I don’t have high hopes for the river today

Any of it beats what I am doing right now., which is working.

Getting close to the time of year where I am willing to burn a sick day to get on the stream.

In currently in the gorge (stupid I know) and I just had a 14-15 Incher come all the way out of the water chasing my sex dungeon streamer. Just targeting the bank, the fish seem to be active and the water clarity isn’t horrible
The fact you have service in the gorge and are posting updates is a feat in itself.
Some of the side channels might produce in these flows. What is the water temp?

Full report later, insane day so far don’t want to waste any of it.
I only had service in the gorge because I was fishing literally right below the parking lot 😂 quickly lost it. The side channels have been the ticket so far however

Well I know where I’m not rushing to fish tomorrow lol. I’m glad you found some fish! Looking forward to the whole report.

Here’s a recap of the day:
Started fishing at around 12:15 at the lower end of the gorge. I fished with nymphs for about 10 minutes with no success before switching to a big streamer. On my very first cast behind a boulder a decent brown chased it back as I stripped it back and ate it on the surface, practically at my feet. I missed the fish, and immediately downsized my streamer to a mini version of the same fly.

I fished from the parking lot to the first railroad trestle without any more bites, although I kept seeing things behind my fly. I fished the piling closest to the right bank and had a 10-12 Incher short strike it two casts in a row, but it didn’t hook up. I attempted to wade further out to fish the middle of the bridge but I barely made it a quarter of the way out before I was losing my footing. That was the first and only time I ventured over 5 feet from the bank the entire day.

Soon I came the the part where the river splits in two just upstream from the trestle, and I fished my way up the smaller side channel. Near the top, I came to a very nice looking run that had very fast flows and a fallen tree up at the head. On my very first cast I got smoked by a big fish, and this one actually got hooked.

The fish was 16 and 1/2 inches, my first ever little J wild brown and my first fish on an articulated streamer.

I worked my way up to the second trestle over the next half hour. Wading was very sketchy in places but I managed to safely make it through. Along the way, I had several follows. Then, in the big pool below the trestle, I had a 15 or so Incher follow and ultimately hit the streamer twice, but he came unhooked after a second and it never returned on my following casts.

I fished underneath the trestle, casting as close as possible to the bridge piling and letting the streamer sink for a solid 10-15 seconds before stripping it back upstream very slowly. After about 5 minutes of casting I felt a tug and set the hook on my second trout of the day, a very nice 13 inch wild brown.

The wading got harder after this point and I didn’t see any promising side channels in sight, so I turned around and fished downstream to the first trestle. Along the way, I missed several fish, including another 15-16 inch fish that flashed on my streamer in the same side channel where I caught my big one.

After fishing the first trestle again, I returned to my car and drove around Barree, stopping to fish by the bridge and a few other spots, before returning to the gorge where I missed one more 10 incher below the parking lot.

I ended the day with two fish, but that’s still 2 better than last time and they were both very, very nice fish. A more experienced fisherman likely could have caught at least 6-7 fish in the same stretch I fished, I just kept pulling the fly away from the fish too soon and blowing all of the chances. Overall, it was a great day and I can’t wait to go back.

The first trestle, this pic really shows how stained and fast the water was. Very difficult wading

Awesome report!
Seriously the chefs kiss of reports. And in real time. Sweet man.

Congratulations on that big one on the articulated! It’s very pretty.

I sense a big brookie in your future this year.

You ( and Dudemanspecial) motivated me to go out today around 2:30 this afternoon. (Not the little J) sometimes that alone narrows it down for Swattie, so I can’t give anymore info. I also fished today and fish were definitely on streamers. Fished about an hour. Right as the cloud cover moved in. Caught one and missed one. But it was quite large to say the least. Water temp was 32 degrees. Yikes (Oh no more Swattie clues.) Taken on two different themometers 4 times. Both fish came on large streamers after the swing on the hang. Long hangs. Like air Jordan hangtime.

I owe you a brookie trip @Mikey2006 for the motivation and the nice fish that was landed. I’ll leave it at that 😉

Might have to take you up on that offer if I don’t get my big brookie sometime soon 😂

Yeah the streamer bite was incredible, I’ve never experienced anything like it firsthand until today, the spooky and smart fish that completely eluded me when the water was clear were suddenly flying out of the water and coming right up to my feet chasing a big fly.

Well Pm me , ideally before September and October. Because that's big brookie season. Although my two biggest came in August and November lol.

I’m glad you had fun. Streamer fishing is more like musky fishing. Not alot happens sometimes, it’s why I keep track of misses and fish landed. Such low numbers are usually pretty easy to remember without requiring the I’m counting fish level of data tracking.

I’m assuming you are from somewhere close to the little J?
I didn’t have a way to take the water temperature. As a matter of fact, I was so excited after catching my fish that I don’t even remember how cold it felt when I was handling the fish. So I really can’t provide anything of value on that other than that it was probably pretty cold 😂

Yeah I’m not too far. Girlfriend has a place on Bald Eagle creek. So I’m right there a few days a week usually.

I was just curious about the water temp. No biggie. I didn’t take the temp till after I caught that big boy. I couldn’t believe it was such cold 32degree water and they were still hitting big streamers. That’s why I kept checking the temp over and over. I thought my thermometer was busted.

It had to be a little warmer water where you were I would think.
