Gonna be a buzzkill here for a moment….

I dont pay much attention to sports anymore. Who is threatening athletes? Bettors
I'm thinking it's some kind of organized crime. We've already seeing lots of issues with point shaving/etc. It would appear the new types of bets(parlays and individual stats) make it easier to fix things.

I'm under the impression most of it is fixed at this point, and even if its not the majority of the people involved are not the type of people i like to root for. I still watch hockey playoffs, i resisted watching all year (former flyers fan) but i started watching the playoffs and i'm hooked again. Perhaps my love for the game makes me biased but i think hockey seems least likely to be fixed for several reasons (except for by the league itself insisting there be a team in vegas and they win the cup)

I just have never really thought that way. For the few times in history and the shame and notoriety it brought, I think sports is largely on the up and up. Widespread gambling may change my mind

When I go trout fishing it is probably, to use a contemporary term, "forest bathing". In other words I am immersing myself in nature and it is a reliable way to feel at peace for me. I don't need weed or beer to feel good.

Makes me sick hearing the Phillies announcers promoting this garbage. It’s bad enough to have commercials but now they have it while the game is being played.

I have to say that this is one of the best "general topic" threads in recent memory. "Forest Bathing" I love that and I agree. I think there is this slipping into the hunter/fisher DNA for me. Things become smaller and more in focus. For me it's the figuring it out. Not sure if booze or reefer would help or hurt that at all.
One good thing about growing up poor, it removes some of life's temptations. You need cash to bet. The weird thing is that I don't even hear the gambling ads when I do watch a sporting event. They drone on and on you just become numb. Is that the intent?

I have to wonder about the number of lives currently being ruined by sports betting ads. Alcohol advertising is a distant second.
The ads are one thing; the permeation of the gambling industry into everything sports is another. One could argue that permeation is just an extension of commercials/advertising. That little ticker running across the bottom of your screen during sporting events? Look how much it is filled with gambling related info... Pre-game shows have a spot dedicated to odds for this, that and the other thing, with a prognosticator making their pick and parlay for the things to pick that are on the screen. ESPN's website has gambling stats mixed into every thing and now they've got their own branded sports book as well. Look how many athletes, trainers, managers, sports team employees get caught up in all this...

Worst offenders are the blue line posters that show a 4" gemmie, a flower bloom, some fancy sandwiches they brought and a micro brew that has a hint of leather followed by rose water notes at the tail end. That's weaker than the 4" fish you caught 🤣😂

I try to keep it legit with pepperoni bread and Busch Latte or Banquets when I can. But, largely, guilty as charged.

For me, the WAY overdone product placements
are kin to the strike zone box of televised Baseball games.

Everyone has a price and that's the problem. It's a pretty safe bet that most people in TV and film are without morals or conscience.
You can throw a wider net than just TV and film.
Same as it ever was.
And everyone is a weasel.

I guess I have a hard time understanding gambling because I hate to lose money...

I used to love baseball (gave up on it about 6 years ago) and was a die hard Yankees fan but never bet a nickle on a game or championship even back in 1990's.

I may have played cards for money twice in my life and the last time was so long ago I really don't remember when or the stakes.

I used to date a girl in South Jersey when I lived in NYC. I took an Atlantic City bus to go see her and they gave everyone a $10 voucher for the casino where the bus stopped. I used to give my vouchers away and would wait to be picked up by my girlfriend in front of the casino.

When the Mount Airy Casino opened my wife & I went because we know the owner. It was my first time ever inside of a casino so we decided to risk $20 on the slots. After about three minutes that $20 was history and we walked out and have never had an urge to go back or to any other casino.

I use the money I save by not gambling to buy alcoholic beverages to enjoy while forest bathing... ;)

Granted, sometimes forest bathing just feels like swamp-arse, especially when wet wading with mosquitoes already in May....

I have to remind myself to look up and enjoy where I'm at, even if it's behind some Lehigh Valley factory. Otherwise, I might forget to enjoy the sights and sounds or get attacked by new goose parents.

Talk about being a buzz kill?

Dear Board,

For the ultimate buzzkill I present the latest advertisement from the shilliest fly shop on the planet Earth.

I haven't darkened their doorway since 1989 when they were a stand alone shop in Reading. They'll never see me again and that's the easiest promise I've ever made in my lifetime.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

3/4 of a pound empty? Yikes! So full with 6 ounces of whiskey it is over a pound in weight! First the booze.
Now it seems like the industry is also promoting weightlifting with that one Tim! 😀

I think this should be mandatory attire for fishing the Spring hatch season on the Big 4. Just ordered mine for next year. (I’m giving the fish a rest already now this year.)

I wouldn’t want any of us refined fly fishing types to be confused with the spincaster guys who hang half a sixer of High Life cans from their hip wader loops.

No buzzkill here. Friend of Bill's for 22 years, come July 12th.
Ha, yeah, me too. I loved alcohol so much I had to give it up forever. I haven't had a drink in years. Sometimes I really miss it, and then I remember just how mismanaged my life was.

I mean this wholeheartedly: I can't believe I'm still alive. It's a miracle.
